NCA Contractor Categories Explained for 2026

Mr. James Kamau22 October 20256 min read

When you hire a contractor in Kenya, their NCA registration category directly determines the size and type of project they are legally permitted to undertake. Hiring the wrong category is not just a regulatory violation — it can void your insurance and create personal liability for the project owner.

The Seven NCA Categories

The NCA grades contractors from NCA1 (the most capable) through NCA7 (the smallest), based on their financial capacity, equipment, personnel, and track record. Each grade carries both a maximum project value cap and minimum eligibility requirements.

  • NCA1: Unlimited project value — for Kenya's largest contractors with substantial paid-up capital and a multi-decade track record.
  • NCA2: Projects up to KES 2 billion — international-scale work.
  • NCA3: Projects up to KES 500 million.
  • NCA4: Projects up to KES 200 million — mid-tier commercial work.
  • NCA5: Projects up to KES 50 million — solid residential and commercial range.
  • NCA6: Projects up to KES 15 million.
  • NCA7: Projects up to KES 5 million — entry-level contractors.

Separate Registrations for Roads vs Buildings

Contractors hold separate NCA registrations for Building Works and Road Works. A company can be NCA4 for buildings and NCA6 for roads simultaneously. Always verify both categories match your project scope — a building contractor's NCA category does not automatically authorize road construction work.

What the 2026 Update Changes

The NCA has tightened its 2026 renewal requirements significantly. Contractors must now provide:

  • Updated tax compliance certificates (KRA)
  • Proof of workers' compensation insurance for all site staff
  • Evidence of at least one registered engineer on the team (NCA4 and above)
  • Updated financial statements audited by a certified accountant

How to Verify a Contractor's NCA Status

The NCA maintains a live online register at nca.go.ke. Search by company name or registration number. Beware of contractors who present expired certificates — NCA registration must be renewed annually. Arch Expert Limited's current NCA certificates (Road Works: 81642/R/1222, Building: 81642/B/1222) are always available to clients on request.
